Rogerian Argument

The Rogerian argument paper will probably be our hardest assignment in this class. I say this because this paper is going to require us to think in a way we normally don’t. We have to look at our debatable topic from the perspective of others. We have to take their point of view into consideration when writing this paper. We must know how we are going to handle our ‘naysayers” whether this is agreeing with them or giving them more evidence to support our own argument. We have to include these “naysayers” in our paper and respond to them. This paper must include ethos, pathos, and logos to effectively support our argument. We are required to follow the MLA format and must have at least 2000 words.

I was already thinking about my “naysayers” as I was picking my topic. My topic is very controversial and I have found that either people fully support breastfeeding or they are completely against it especially when discussing breastfeeding in public. Actually even mentioning my paper topic to friends and family I received several different opinions that could be very useful for me in this particular paper. My informative paper was about three different aspects of breastfeeding so figuring out how to incorporate “naysayers” for each point will be my hardest task for this paper. I’m excited to get started on this paper.

Self-Review is Getting Easier.

Thankfully for me the self review is getting easier each time we have to use them. While there were a few things I needed to work on overall I was happy. I need to move a few statements around to make the paper flow better and improve the overall organization. I thought my thesis statement was effective and I had several supporting points. There was one point in my paper that I felt could use a little more support, but the rest of them had plenty of support. Like my last paper I could use more effective transition words. I also had a few sentences that I need to reword to ensure the reader will fully understand the point I am trying to make. I tend to start typing my paper and then go back and read and reread and sometimes what sounded great in my head doesn’t look so great on paper or sound as good when I reread it.

For me the most important improvement I need to make is effectively using transition words. I tend to forget about transition words while I’m working on my paper and usually have to go back after I’m done and reword to add them in. When transition words are used effectively it helps the overall flow of the paper. Transition words also let the reader know where they are at in your paper. Overall, I was really happy with this paper and only had to make minor changes.

The Aspects of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has been around for decades. Breastfeeding is natural and several decades ago was the only source of nutrition for an infant. The use of wet nurses was very popular in the 1700’s although the popularity of wet nurses has decreased significantly over the years. Throughout our history breastfeeding has been thought to provide several benefits for both mother and infant. These benefits range from maternal weight loss to a healthier immune system in the breastfed infant. While one would look at these facts and assume that breastfeeding is necessary and the best choice we need to understand there are also some negative aspects as well. Breastfeeding requires a lot of dedication and patience on the mother’s behalf. There are several situations where a nursing mother has been discriminated against for nursing her infant in a public location. With this discrimination comes a feeling of uneasiness when deciding what is right for mother and baby. The history of breastfeeding has shown benefits for both mother and infant, although it can garner a lot of negative feedback from peers.

Research on breastfeeding has shown there are many benefits for both mother and infant. These include health, social, and emotional benefits. Such as Maternal weight loss and overall better health of the infant. “Breast milk provides normal nutrition for infants, while providing protection from a wide array of illnesses and infections” (Westdahl and Page-Goertz 2)
