Breastfeeding
has been around for decades. Breastfeeding is natural and several decades ago
was the only source of nutrition for an infant. The use of wet nurses was very
popular in the 1700’s although the popularity of wet nurses has decreased
significantly over the years. Throughout our history breastfeeding has been
thought to provide several benefits for both mother and infant. These benefits
range from maternal weight loss to a healthier immune system in the breastfed
infant. While one would look at these facts and assume that breastfeeding is
necessary and the best choice we need to understand there are also some
negative aspects as well. Breastfeeding requires a lot of dedication and
patience on the mother’s behalf. There are several situations where a nursing
mother has been discriminated against for nursing her infant in a public
location. With this discrimination comes a feeling of uneasiness when deciding
what is right for mother and baby. The history of breastfeeding has shown
benefits for both mother and infant, although it can garner a lot of negative
feedback from peers.
Research on breastfeeding has shown there are
many benefits for both mother and infant. These include health, social, and
emotional benefits. Such as Maternal weight loss and overall better health of the infant. “Breast milk provides normal nutrition for
infants, while providing protection from a wide array of illnesses and
infections” (Westdahl and Page-Goertz 2)
