Filter Bubbles, Trackers, and Machines Oh My!!

Are we all in filter bubbles unknowingly? Yes, I believe we are all in filter bubbles and don’t even realize we are. I really like the examples Pariser used especially the Netflix example because I can relate to this. Actually tonight my husband and I were trying to find a movie on Netflix and I found it amusing that most of the movies it showed us were scary horror flicks, because that is what we have been watching the last couple of days.
Oh trackers! I find trackers on the internet very scary. I’m most concerned about my family’s privacy when we are online. The scariest moment for me was when I posted a picture of my toddler on facebook and realized if you clicked on the image it gave you a map to my house. How scary that anyone on the internet has a personal road map straight to your home. The one place that is supposed to be safe.
I found Turkle’s video very intriguing! The sad thing about her video is you see this everywhere you go. I was at the park with my son yesterday and made it a point to leave my phone in my car. I was amazed how many parents were disconnected from their young children. We have a rule in my house absolutely no technology on while eating dinner. We have real family conversations and we enjoy dinner together as a family and we really cherish that family time every night.

  1. I have a program called PC Boost. Every few days or so it runs a scan on my computer and removes issues that it detects. This morning when I logged into my lap top it had securely removed 2271 information tracers a.k.a. trackers. I have known about potential internet harm for some time. I was more educated on it last year in my computer literacy course at my former school. Further, I have known of web sites that you can download apps to break into anyone's online data to steal from their data package. I was personally a victim of this when my data usage went through the roof. On my phone I have 4 layers of purchased security. On my laptop I have 2. The first one does the trick, the second is just a back up. It does not block tracers though to the extent that we all get hit on. I hope that one day as technology ever changes, that more laws for privacy will be put into place to protect the everyday consumer and their family.

  2. Natasha I relate to this as Ronnie and I believe he makes a very good point on the security issues. I feel I may look into some of the security options he mentioned specially the PC Boost for I have a lot of issues with my computer and very little to no security.

  3. It scares me also to think that my privacy could be in danger. But when I was researching this I found myself worrying about my little sister. She puts anything and everything on the internet and I'm afraid that it'll catch up to her.
