Technology and It's Controlling Ways.

I think we all know that technology controls us in some way or another, but are we all willing to admit this. The first thing I do in the morning is wake my children up and then get on the internet and check the weather to dress them appropriately. After they are off to school I indulge in facebook and usually get sucked in for way longer than I had hoped. I then check my emails and check my SEMO website to ensure nothing needs to be addressed. So there goes my whole morning, and you ask well what did you do? My answer is absolutely nothing, but waste time consumed in technology.

My Iphone is another reason I think technology controls me. When I leave my house and forget my phone I fell lost and quickly try to finish my errands so I can go home and get it. How ridiculous many of us have a panic attack when we realize our phones aren’t with us. Everywhere you turn someone has a cell phone on them and we are on them ninety percent of the time. I have even seen children as young as six with brand new Iphones. I know personally I would have a hard time not using my phone or internet for a couple hours let alone a couple days. So the question is how long can you go without technology? This answer will determine if you are controlling technology or if it is controlling you!

  1. Natasha I completely relate to that! I once forgot my phone when going to run errands (about 2 hours) and I can't count how many times I reached for it and honestly think that by the time I got home I was going to have an anxiety attack. I also think it quite funny at times when a 'cellphone' will ring in public and 'everyone' jumps to answer or look at theirs.

  2. Natasha,
I would be baffled if I lost my phone. It just seems as if it is a part of me and should be with me at all times. I wake up to my phone and go to bed with my phone. Every month I go over my allowed data usage on my cell phone plan...oops! I think if the internet was not so easily accessible, I would not be on my phone as much but then like Vicki said I would have an anxiety attack. Great job on the blog post.

  3. Natasha, several people have brought up the question of whether you can abstain from technology or not. I think this is an important question, but it's also deeper than this. How does technology influence us without us even realizing it? I think that's the deeper question. But perhaps the most important question is, What can we do about it?

  4. It is funny how controlling technology can be. One thing I have noticed is this is one of the first blog topics almost all of us have had the same or similar answers. One of the sad things is how subconscious the control really is. You do not even think about it, no one does. It is now part of life, almost like an extension of our selves. Until the next paradigm shift brings us something new we will be under its' control.

  5. Natasha,
I can really relate to the anxiety you feel when you realize you do not have your phone with you. I always have my iPhone with me. It's always by my side so I can easily check in on twitter or facebook. I always make sure I have it. When I do not have my phone near me, it's like I cannot function. I feel lost without my phone. It's like I cannot complete a task or do anything for myself if I do not have my phone. That is pretty sad.
