I chose a paper over school safety as my reading for this
assignment. This paper discusses the Virginia Tech School shooting and what we
can do to make schools safer for our children. They discuss the different sides
of those individuals that are for tighter school safety and those that are
opposed to it. I like that the paper tried to stay neutral and showed you facts
from both sides and let you make your decision based on facts. I also liked the
fact the writer included statistics because it was easier for me to visualize
what they were trying to say.
I believe they start off with the Virginia Tech story so
they can capture their audience’s attention. The writer then goes straight into
statistics this helps establish their ethos. I thought the writer effectively used
all three appeals throughout the paper. The writer starts with an Ethical
appeal by displaying the statistics of shoot shootings, then goes into a
pathetic appeal by discussing how parents feel about school violence and
elaborating on the Virginia Tech School shooting, and lastly they sum up the
paper with a logical appeal. This paper helped persuade me on the side of not
having tighter safety measures. I made this decision based on the facts this
paper provided me while reading. Overall, I really liked the ideas used to
write this paper. I thought it was clear and interesting as well as successful in
the factual approach used.

Natasha, this sounds like a very well written article and like it could be interesting to read. I could relate to the article some, since I am still in high school and since my school has changed because of the recent shootings. Our administration has put security doors in our elementary building and our high school building.
ReplyDeleteI think it is interesting that article was not biased. The one I chose sure was!
Great post!
Natasha-
ReplyDeleteGood job summarizing this article. I also find it interesting that the article is not bias with it being such a debatable topic. I’m not sure how I feel about the security tightening up at our schools, I think it could help but also become a problem. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad that you were able to find an unbiased paper about school safety. It seems like now all anyone wants to do is give teachers guns! I think that security in schools is important, but updating and reinforcing every school in America is a little extreme. They should already be safe enough for all children to go to.
